I enjoy this time of year for two reasons. The weather is cooler, but not too cool yet. And, I love the colors of this season. I still have a few roses blooming (They like cooler weather, too.) as well as zinnias and Mexican sunflowers. This year, I finally started a coneflower and its first bud opened! We’ll see if the other buds have time to open before frost.
As I view the mountains around my home I see the trees have adorned themselves in their fall dresses of orange, red, and yellow. Their colors are prettiest before frost. Driving these country roads has been a visual delight for a couple weeks now. My daughter and grandson came to visit for a few days and we traveled to Lost River State Park and the surrounding area. We had a beautiful day to travel and enjoyed finding the place where Lost River disappears into the mountain. It reappears as the Cacapon River two miles away. We didn’t travel to that point.
At this time of year, I’m watching weather predictions because very soon, we will most likely have our first frost. I will get a winter cover ready to put over my new lettuce which is growing, but not quite ready to eat. I also have pepper plants that are still bearing green peppers, so I will cover them for a while. The winter cover will prolong the growing season for a few weeks.
As I think about things to do before frost I’m reminded of the brevity of life. There is a “frost” death coming for all. There is no winter cover to extend our life on earth, but if we are Christ followers we are covered by His blood and we have assurance of eternal life in heaven.
While we wait for our eternal season of life we have work to do. We have friends and neighbors to love and serve. We have the needy and hopeless folks to help. We have many reasons to spend time with God in prayer. . . for our families, our churches, our preachers, our friends, and our country. No matter your job, we can all love and serve others! Do it! Before frost!
“Be very careful, then, how you live–not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16).
